All students are expected to attend and participate in person at the assigned day/time. (F2F) Prerequisite or Corequisite: FST 205 The focus of this course is the history and aesthetics of American cinema since the end of the Hollywood studio era. Special attention will be given to the conditions that shaped the continuities and discontinuities of the “Classical Hollywood” milieu. The objective of the course will be to examine ways that contemporary films are dynamic historical sites of political, social, aesthetic, and ideological implications. Topics covered will include independent cinemas, blockbusters, auteurism, demographics, the ratings system, and genre transformation which will inform students’ understanding about the growth of Hollywood films as an important index of the American cultural climate.
